UPDATE: Suspicious Death in Castleton - Avoid South Street and the D&H Rail Trail

UPDATE: 10-6-2023 (8:10AM) - The search for an individual suspected of killing a woman in Castleton on Thursday continues today. Members of the Vermont State Police did a house-to-house canvasing of homes in close proximity to the rail trail last night. The search was unsuccessful and will continue today (Friday). Residents are urged to keep their doors and vehicles locked and not to leave keys in unattended vehicles. Residents are asked to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or people to the Vermont State Police

According to the VSP press release from Thursday, "A witness in the area reported a possible suspect was northbound on the rail trail walking towards the Castleton Campus after gunshots were heard. The witness described the male as a white male approximately 5'10", short dark-colored hair, last seen wearing a dark gray t-shirt and carrying a black backpack."

The VSP press release also stated, "The suspect is considered armed and dangerous. The public is urged to remain vigilant and alert for suspicious person(s) and activities and to report anything suspicious to the Vermont State Police." "Anyone with information that could assist investigators in this case is asked to call the Vermont State Police in Rutland at 802-773-9101. Tips also may be submitted anonymously online at https://vsp.vermont.gov/tipsubmit."

UPDATE (10-5-2023): The search continues for a suspect related in the suspicious death of an individual in Castleton earlier Thursday. Vermont State Police are conducting a house-to-house canvassing of homes in the area in an attempt to make contact with a suspect. Residents are urged to be aware of their surroundings, keep doors and vehicles locked, and do not leave keys in vehicles. As the search continues for a suspect, please make phone calls to friends and family in the area to check in on them. If going into buildings or outbuildings that are not/have not been locked, use the buddy system, meaning have another person with you, and have a cell phone with you whenever possible. Report suspicious activities or suspicious acting individuals through the 911 system. 

Suspicious Death in Castleton - Avoid South Street and the D&H Rail Trail Castleton Police Department and the Vermont State Police are investigating a suspicious death near the Vermont State University at Castleton near the D&H Rail Trail. It is early in the investigation and more information will follow. No suspect has been apprehended at the time. Residents are asked to remain vigilant and alert for suspicious persons and activities and to report such through the 911 system. Residents are asked to lock doors and vehicles. Do not leave keys in vehicles. South Street has been closed. Do not attempt to travel South Street or use the rail trail at this time.
