Updates to the Noise Ordinance: Adopted December 11, 2023
Town of Castleton
Noise Ordinance amendment
At the 12/11/2023 Selectboard meeting the following changes were adopted to the Town’s Noise Ordinance:
The present Castleton noise ordinance was enforced after 11:00 PM each day in accordance to existing years of practice and the Town’s ordinance, leaving the discretion to the enforcing police officer to issue a civil fine. During the past (2) years the Castleton Police Department received numerous complaints of noise ordinance violations before 11:00 PM.
After months of research, in collaboration with the Chief of Police, we decreased the time to 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM and instituted a standardized decibel rating of 70 dBA (decibels A) to measure violations that occur during those hours. The new ordinance also maintains officer discretion when enforcing the ordinance during other times. There is a list of exceptions to the enforcement of the Ordinance.
