UPDATE: Power Outages/Castleton's Emergency Shelter Closing at 9:00AM Sunday Morning

EMERGENCY SHELTER CLOSING AT 9:00AM ON SUNDAY MORNING

UPDATE: 1/14/2024 (1:45AM)

Green Mountain Power continues to work to restore power to over 200 Castleton customers. This is a moving target, but according to one GMP official, power isn't expected to be restored until Sunday afternoon, possibly into Monday for those along the East Hubbardton Road/Sugarwood Lane areas. The weather forecast on Sunday is calling for windy conditions from 11AM-6:00PM and temperatures will remain in the high 20's for much of the day. The lack of power and heat will create some dangerous conditions for some homes, so check on your neighbors and help each other if possible.

The emergency shelter at American Legion Post #50 opened at 5:30PM on Saturday afternoon will remain open until 9:00AM Sunday morning. Nobody used the shelter, but it was staffed and ready to provide a warm meal, a warm safe space to sleep, and some good board games. A special thanks to a few dedicated volunteers, the American Legion Post Commander, and Legion Manager for their selfless service getting the shelter open and ready to help a neighbor in need. The Post Commander and Town Manager manned the shelter overnight and were prepared if a resident(s) showed up needing to get warm, get some rest, charge a phone, or have something to eat.

The emergency shelter at American Legion Post #50 will remain open until 9:00AM Sunday morning. If a resident needs assistance after the shelter closes, they can use the VT 211 system to request assistance. If you do try using the 211 system, please do not email or text VT211. Please call them at 211 or 802-652-4636 or 866-652-4636. They are unable to provide intakes for motel rooms via email or text. UPDATE: 1/13/2024 (4:00PM)

Green Mountain Power Crews continue their work to restore power to over 10 incidents and hundreds of customers in Castleton. Green Mountain Power advised that power for many customers, especially those who reside on East Hubbardton Road, Frisbee Hill Road, Route 4A east of East Hubbardton Road, and possibly other areas, that power is not likely to be restored until Sunday afternoon, or possibly into Monday. With temperatures predicted to drop below freezing overnight, it warrants opening a shelter.

The Town of Castleton partners with American Legion Post #50 located on Route 4A in Castleton to facilitate an emergency shelter. Coordination is underway to open an overnight shelter. This can be used for warming, charging a cell phone, having a warm drink and snack, or to remain overnight. The accommodations are crude, meaning cots and blankets, but it will get people out of the cold and they will be able to stay warm, charge their phones, and be in a safe environment. Unfortunately, the shelter is not able to accept pets. If you need to evacuate your home and have pets, the shelter staff can connect you with the Rutland Area Disaster Animal Response Team to see if they can help with sheltering pets.

The shelter will be open this evening starting at 5:30PM. Those who need evacuate to a shelter but need assistance to do so, please call 911 to let them know. That request for assistance will be passed to your local police, fire or EMS departments. The number to the shelter is the (802) 468-8962 or mobile (802) 345-2317.

If you don't want to stay at a shelter there is another possible option. If you don't have an alternate source of heat and need to evacuate your residence, and don't have family or friends to stay with, you can also try use the 211 system to request assistance. If you do try using the 211 system, please do not email or text VT211. Please call them at 211 or 802-652-4636 or 866-652-4636. They are unable to provide intakes for motel rooms via email or text.
