PUBLIC NOTICE - Sewer Smoke Testing - August 4 & 5, 2026

WWTF Smoke Testing

PUBLIC NOTICE
Sewer Smoke Testing — August 4 and 5, 2026

The Town of Castleton Wastewater Department, with assistance from Vermont Rural Water, will be conducting smoke testing of selected sewer lines on August 4 and 5, 2026.

Smoke testing is used to help identify defects in the sewer collection system, such as broken sewer lines, improper connections, leaking cleanouts, and areas where stormwater or groundwater may be entering the sewer system. This testing helps the Town locate sources of infiltration and inflow that can increase flows to the wastewater treatment facility.

During the testing, residents and businesses may see smoke coming from roof vents, yard areas, cleanouts, drains, or basement areas. The smoke used for this test is theater-style smoke and is non-toxic and harmless under normal conditions. It does not indicate a fire.

If smoke enters a building, it may indicate a plumbing issue such as a dry drain trap, defective plumbing, or an improper connection. Residents can help prevent smoke from entering by pouring water into seldom-used floor drains, sinks, and basement drains prior to testing.

The Fire Department and Police Department will be notified of the testing in advance.

Thank you for your cooperation.
