Information Regarding the July 3, 2026, Fireworks Display at the University
We understand that many residents are disappointed that this year's Independence Day fireworks will not be launched over Lake Bomoseen. The tradition of watching fireworks over the lake is something that many families have enjoyed for years, and we recognize how important that tradition is to our community.
However, the decision to relocate the fireworks display to Vermont State University at Castleton was not made lightly. Public safety concerns were the primary factor in the change of venue.
Over the past several years, parking at Crystal Beach and the surrounding area has become increasingly problematic during the fireworks event. Vehicles have parked along Vermont Route 30, reducing traffic flow and creating significant concerns for emergency vehicle access and public safety. As attendance continued to grow, the Town became increasingly concerned about the risks associated with overcrowding, inadequate parking, and restricted roadway access. With 2026 marking our nation's 250th anniversary, an even larger crowd was anticipated. Additionally, once July 3 became available for the fireworks display, neighboring communities such as Fair Haven and Poultney did not have fireworks scheduled that evening, creating the possibility of even greater attendance in Castleton.
There were also concerns regarding the fireworks launch site itself. Based on the size of the shells used during the display, required minimum safety distances could not be met at the Crystal Haven Common launch location. The required setback for the shells being discharged is 432 feet, and the site does not provide that distance.
In recent years, debris from fireworks has fallen onto nearby homes, boats, and surrounding properties. There have been instances where burning debris landed on roofs, ignited leaf litter near homes, and damaged boat covers and awnings. While emergency personnel have been present during these events, property damage has still occurred before intervention was possible. These incidents raised serious concerns for the Town, the Fire Department, and the fireworks provider.
The relocation of the fireworks display was made to provide a safer environment for residents, visitors, emergency responders, and surrounding property owners. While we understand that not everyone agrees with the decision, the responsibility of Town officials is to prioritize public safety whenever risks are identified.
The new venue also offers several advantages. There is ample off-street parking available, including handicapped-accessible parking spaces located near the pavilion. Attendees will find plenty of grassy areas as well as hard-surface locations where they can comfortably set up lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy the evening's activities and fireworks display.
The celebration will begin before the fireworks. From 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on July 3, the band Satin and Steel will perform under the pavilion. There is a large grassy area adjacent to the pavilion where attendees can relax, set up lawn chairs, and enjoy live music with family and friends before the fireworks begin. At least one food vendor will also be on-site during the event.
Those who wish to bring their own food are welcome to tailgate in the parking areas before the festivities. However, attendees should be aware that university policies prohibit alcohol and nicotine products anywhere on campus grounds.
Only Registered/Licensed service animals are allowed on the campus for the Independence Day activities; all other pets are not allowed.
For those interested in the future of Independence Day celebrations in Castleton, a committee will be formed to begin planning the 2027 festivities. An announcement will be made later this summer or early fall regarding meeting dates and opportunities for community involvement. We encourage anyone with ideas, concerns, or a passion for this tradition to participate in the planning process.
A few additional reminders:
• The fireworks will be held on Friday, July 3. The fireworks company was unavailable on July 4, and scheduling begins each year in October and November. July 4 was the Town's preference, but once it became unavailable, July 3 was selected.
• Lawn chairs, blankets, and similar items are welcome throughout the viewing areas; however, lawn chairs are not permitted inside the stadium. This policy is established by the venue and is not under Town control.
As we approach this special celebration, we encourage everyone to focus on the reason we gather each year—to celebrate our nation's independence and, this year, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. While traditions sometimes change, the spirit of community, patriotism, and coming together to celebrate remains the same.
We appreciate everyone's understanding and cooperation as we work to provide a safe, enjoyable, and memorable celebration for all.
